5 Reasons 'Archer' Is the Funniest New Comedy on TV
After Austin Powers, Maxwell Smart and who knows how many other take-offs on James Bond, do we really need another spy spoof? If you're talking 'Archer,' FX's hilarious new animated series, then yes, yes we do.
Picture it as 'Mad Men,' if the opening graphics were the whole show, and it wasn't about Sterling Cooper, New York ad agency, but Sterling Archer, ISIS intelligence agent. And if it were a whole lot sillier. And more crass.
Or maybe it's more like old-school Hanna-Barbera adventure series 'Jonny Quest,' but with actual swear words and zero life lessons.
Here are five excellent reasons why you should be tuning in to 'Archer,' this season's funniest new comedy from creator Adam Reed, ('Space Ghost: Coast to Coast') and voice talents from 'Family Guy,' 'Saturday Night Live' and 'Arrested Development.'
1. Archer: The lead character (H. Jon Benjamin, aka Carl on 'Family Guy') is your average drink-swilling, womanizing super spy who runs up outrageous expense accounts. "Lying, is, like, 80 percent of what I do," he informs his dweeby romantic rival, Cyril Figgus. In the episode, 'Training Day,' Archer takes Cyril under his wing, teaching him important things like when to use an underwear gun and how to spot multiple threats while tangoing with a call girl. His "Miss Moneypenny" is secretary Cheryl (Judy Greer), who's legally changed her name to Carol because that's what Archer keeps calling her.
2. Lana Kane: As voiced by Aisha Tyler, Lana is Archer's bitter ex, a super-shapely, spear-gun-toting hottie who's got a thing for interracial porn and switchblade interrogations of coworkers. She's Lara Croft meets Foxy Brown. During the 'Mole Hunt,' episode, can you blame us for flashing back to the real Tyler's stint on '24' as yet another CTU mole? Frankly, she's a lot more fun here as badass Lana.3. The dialogue: Would James Bond ever dismiss karate as "the Dane Cook of martial arts?" (ISIS agents use the much trendier Krav Maga.) Or would he urge a colleague, "Shoot, bitch! Democracy's at stake!" Well, since Bond works for Her Royal Highness and not Uncle Sam, probably not. We also doubt he'd debate the proper use of irony or carry weapons that "go off, for, like, no reason."
4. The most Freudian mother-son relationship since 'The Sopranos': Archer's mother, Malory (voiced by 'Arrested Development's equally messed-up matriarch, Jessica Walter), was a single mother working Black Ops, whose idea of a Christmas greeting was sending her son a note that said, "Tehran is free. Merry Xmas." Now she's an alcoholic ball-buster who loves seeing him fail. And did Tony Soprano ever say, "If you ever mention my mother's loins, or their frothiness to me again, I don't know what I'll do." 5. Did we mention it's a cartoon rated TV-MA? With the full LSV? Meaning each episode's got enough bad language, sex and violence to keep Ned Flanders in a censoring tizzy for months. And enough political incorrectness to trump its '60s influences. Plus ISIS's ridiculously low-tech gadgetry makes 'Get Smart's' CONTROL look like NASA. It's that kind of modern (and yet so retro) take on an incredibly dated concept that keeps us laughing.

FX has hit in animated 'Archer'
FX appears to have an instant cult hit with the new animated "Archer" series.The adult spy comedy cartoon debuted to good ratings last Thursday night and has generated a lot of positive chatter online and in the media.
With a kind of retro '60s stilted animation style that recalls the loopy "Space Ghost" talk show that aired on Cartoon Network, "Archer" is a deadpan satire that is clever, silly, sexy, vulgar, politically incorrect and laugh-out-loud funny all at the same time.
College frat boys are gonna fall in love with this one.
The series follows the misadventures of self-absorbed super spy Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin). He's a handsome, skirt-chasing, booze-loving man who is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
He works for his mother Malory Archer (Jessica Walter of "Arrested Development") who is head of the spy organization ISIS.
Most of the story takes place at the spy headquarters where Archer's co-workers are about as goofy as the characters on "The Office."
Bumbling through each day along with Archer are is his long-suffering butler Woodhouse (George Coe), his buxom ex-lover and fellow spy Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler), his nerdy co-worker Cyril Figis (Chris Parnell of "Saturday Night Live") and the office secretary and gossip Cheryl (Judy Greer). With strong profanity and sex jokes that push the boundaries of bad taste, "Archer" is not for everyone.
But FX has established itself as the place for the most adult programming on basic cable with series such as "Nip/Tuck," "The Shield," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "Rescue Me" and "Sons of Anarchy."
It's definitely a "guy channel" and "Archer" is like an animated, oversexed version of "Get Smart" if that comedy was being made today for HBO.
Created by Adam Reed, whose credits include Cartoon Network's "Sealab 2021,'' the show is basically a workplace comedy about a dysfunctional crew.

Toonzone Presents: A Roundtable Interview with Adam Reed & Aisha Tyler on "Archer"
Toonzone News was able to participate in an hourlong roundtable interview over the phone with Adam Reed, creator of Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo, about his new show Archer, premiering on FX on January 14, 2010. With him was Aisha Tyler, actor and comedian who plays Agent Lana Kane.
AHMAD CHILDRESS/CRAVE ONLINE: I was wondering with the cast you've selected full of performers and comedians whether it was difficult to manage that with the inflexibility of working with animation in general.
AISHA TYLER: With all those drunks, it's difficult. (Laughs)
ADAM REED: Sullen, and needy. (Laughter).
AISHA TYLER: All the time. I'm the most needy.
ADAM REED: No, actually, we record the voices first and animate to that, so our process is all centered around the voice-actor's performance. It's not like we have them read to picture, and that gives us the opportunity to do some ad-libs and goof around in the booth and come up with new stuff. So then we put the voice track against the storyboard cut and we don't animate anything until the end.

Pop-Rock Candy MountainThe last time I interviewed comic Aisha Tyler, I sort of went on and on about how funny and awesome and cool and down to Earth she is. I think that I may have made a fool of myself doting over Ms. Tyler — I mean, she’s a brilliant stand up, she loves sci fi and comic books and video games and she was on 24!
Now, she has teamed up with Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo creator Adam Reed for the new FX series Archer. Oh, it also stars Chris Parnell, Judy Greer and Jessica Walter, who just happened to be on SNL (Parnell) and Arrested Development. I sure am glad I don’t like Adult Swim….yeah right
But I’m not going to fawn all over the lovely Ms. Tyler this go round — no way Jose’. After a brief, yet loving restraining order, Tyler returns to Pop-Rock Candy Mountain on The Super Sonic Robot Talk Show where we discuss Archer and much more.

'Archer' is a sly, witty spy cartoon for adults
H. Jon Benjamin and Aisha Tyler give voice to two of the characters in “Archer, a new half-hour animated series on FX. (Fx)“Archer’’ is a full-on goof on the spy canon from “Dick Tracy’’ comic strips to James Bond and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,’’ and its retro, frozen-panel styling is only the tip of the parody iceberg. The show lifts all kinds of storytelling and character conventions from the likes of “Mission: Impossible’’ and heightens them to the level of absurdity. It’s like “Get Smart,’’ but with a sick, sometimes lewd, twist. The characters are familiar types - the suave master spy, his loyal butler, the older, wiser boss - but with perverse flaws that cry out for psychoanalytic attention. All employees at the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS), they’re Freudian disasters.
To wit, the handsome lead spy, Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin), who is inept, vain, and nasty. He is the son of ISIS chief executive Malory Archer (Jessica Walter), and he has a serious obsession with her. He loves her and despises her at once. In the premiere, he tries to have sex with a woman while talking to his mother on the phone. Later, he becomes sexually aroused at the thought of his mother’s death. Malory, meanwhile, is a harsh taskmaster and a drug and alcohol abuser who at one point has phone sex in view of her son. So perfectly nasty as the matriarch on “Arrested Development,’’ Walter now deserves at least two slots in the pantheon of anti-maternal mothers.
ISIS also employs Archer’s ex-girlfriend, Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler), who is an amalgamation of blaxploitation heroines from the 1970s, such as Teresa Graves’s Christie Love and Pam Grier’s Foxy Brown. She’s kickass, but justice takes a back seat in her mind to interracial pornography and her personal vengeance toward Archer. She is dating nerdy ISIS comptroller Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell) solely to get back at Archer, which we know partly because she keeps praising Cyril for not being Archer. In the background: an ISIS secretary (Judy Greer) whose profound identity issues cause her to change her name depending on whom she is talking to, and Woodhouse (George Coe), Archer’s tormented butler.
“Archer,’’ which was created by Adam Reed, whose credits include Adult Swim’s “Sealab 2021’’ and “Frisky Dingo,’’ does dabble in actual ISIS spy work. But the show is primarily about the office ensemble, as they jockey for power, romance, and sex. Underneath it all, the show is a workplace comedy. I like “Archer’’ because it succeeds where so many of the snarky animated series tend to fail. Reed and his writers and voice actors balance all the pop satire and raunch with a strong sense of the characters, so that the episodes ultimately rise above all the gags. In animation, as in every other genre, character matters.

Aisha Tyler: Kickin' Ass and Taking Names
From Talk Soup to Friends to her new animated gig on the FX spy series Archer, Aisha Tyler takes comedy seriously — especially when she's ruffling feathers with the gay portion of her comedy show in places like North Dakota.
They say being funny and beautiful is a rare combination, and starting Thursday night, Aisha Tyler is going to remind fans just what a gift it is with her starring role on Archer ... albeit this time in animated form.From making history as the first black woman to have a recurring role on Friends to her year and a half spent hosting TV’s Talk Soup, Aisha Tyler has made a career out of being funny, smart, and sexy all rolled into one. Archer lets her add "shocking" to the list — in the story of a himbo, male chauvinist spy who works side by side with his mother (Jessica Walter) and his ex-girlfriend Lana (Tyler), the things that come out of her mouth occasionally make Family Guy sound tame.
In between acting, voice-over work on Archer, and touring with her comedy act, Tyler also finds time to lend her talents to shows like Politically Incorrect and The Joy Behar Show, standing up for gay rights, human rights ... and pretty much whatever she damn well feels like talking about.

Aisha Tyler: Well, you know, the character and even the way she looked was established before they hired me. But I honestly responded to her right away, and since I’ve been with the show, her personality and her tone have evolved to be a little bit closer to me. I’m one of those people who grew up with a dad who took me to see action movies, and that is my favorite genre of film. I love action, I love spy movies, I love the Bond franchise.
It’s very tantalizing as an actor and as a comedian to be a part of a project where, as you’re doing the show, you’re going, "Are they going to let us do this? Oh, my God." The first script, from the very beginning, it felt radical. I remember reading it and laughing out loud several times. And then the character, she’s just this badass girl, and I thought, Hell yeah. It’s like my dream come true.
Well, and it doesn’t hurt that, as animated characters go, Archer’s pretty smokin’ hot.
He is pretty smokin’ hot ... I know. If only he wasn’t such a douche.
We were just talking today about how the word "douche" is back.
It’s totally back. And I’ve been using it a lot. Not a lot of women use it, but it’s one of my faves.
Now we need to credit you with bringing "douche" back.

Is it true what you hear that working on an animated series is an actor’s dream gig?
It is, but it’s funny ... if you’re doing something like a Madagascar, it’s a dream and it pays. But doing a little animated series on FX is not the same as doing another kind of series, because the work permit is not the same. But just the joy of the process is so extraordinary. Especially for this show, it’s just pure elicitation of the funniest, most interesting way of saying something. You don’t have deal with the makeup or the wardrobe ... and, of course, I love live action ... but when you do a live action drama, you’re there at 5 a.m., it’s two or three hours in the morning of getting ready, it’s a 12- or 14-hour day for a couple hours of work. This is just surgical. You get in, get to be as funny as you possibly can for an hour or two, and then you leave.
We haven’t seen any gay characters yet.

For someone who’d rather stay at home, park it on the couch and kill virtual zombies with her husband, playing an oversexed spy on FX’s new animated series Archer is a stretch. But Aisha Tyler — comedian, author, Renaissance woman — can do anything; so long as there’s still time for Xbox.Beyond her incredible career onstage as a stand-up comedian, Aisha Tyler has been no stranger to the small screen, showing a wide range of acting chops in comedies (she played Joey and Ross’ girlfriend on Friends for nine episodes) SciFi dramas (she was Jennifer Love Hewitt’s best friend on Ghost Whisperer) and dark police shows (12 episodes of CSI).
But she’s never played a spy, until now. And she does so, wonderfully. In the new animated FX series Archer, starring H. Jon Benjamin (famous for his role in the classic Dr. Katz) premiering Jan. 14 at 10 pm EST, the down-to-Earth, video game-obsessed Tyler transforms seamlessly into Lana Kane, and under dressed, over-sexed spy who enjoys psychologically abusing her boyfriend. The show itself is a brilliantly written, handsomely drawn 30 minutes of some of the finest adult humor on television.
Tyler’s new role comes on the heels of a banner 2009, having starred in her own one-hour Comedy Central special and DVD Aisha Tyler is Lit: Live at the Fillmore, recorded in her native San Francisco; she’s also in the running to host her own daytime chat show on ABC. The pilot is taped and submitted. Now’s it’s just a waiting game.
We caught up with Tyler a few days ago; she was just home from recording scenes for Archer. We talked about everything from working on an animated show, to her ambassador role in the world of video games, why she doesn’t do political comedy — despite her political science degree from Dartmouth — and much more.

This "Archer" Hits the Bullseye
On paper, Archer is the kind of thing to put you in black, black mood: Another Adam Reed animated series, this one parodying the superspy genre with the same passive-aggressive, absurdist approach he brought to Sealab 2021, nailed into place by the perpetually underperforming Jon Benjamin in the title role. Get Smart by way of The Venture Brothers, in other words. You can practically audio-visualize the premise's tired realization, and the cynical critic can already start writing the headlines before he even watches the previews: "Missing It By That Much." "Shaken, Not Stirred." "The Spy Who Raped Me Up the Ass." (The last is exactly the kind of grimace-making joke you dread coming out of a character's mouth.)
And then the damn thing goes and ruins all the spoilsport fun by actually being funny. Laugh-out-loud funny, even, and not sporadically laugh-out-loud-funny, either. It took me two-and-a-half hours to watch the first five episodes, because I kept rewinding it so I could laugh again at some bit of business or other. I don't remember the last time I did that with a new show.
The series, yes, has a grimly familiar premise, chronicling the misadventures of Sterling Archer, a James Bond type super-spy who is a jerk, a liar, and a sociopath with mommy issues. The recurring cast of characters includes his mother, who runs the spy agency, and his ex-girlfriend, the sexy, part-black black-ops agent Lana Kane; there's also the agency comptroller, its receptionist, and its human resources director. Again, yes, it's that kind of show, one where most of the stories revolve around the bureaucracy. So, in "Mole Hunt" Archer is in trouble over his expense reports. Most of the plot of "Training Day" involves setting up a new health plan. "Killing Utne" takes place at a dinner party where the principals have to woo a potential client. Of the first five episodes, only "Skorpio" really busts out and parodies old-fashioned spy stuff, and even it keeps cutting back to the office, where the staff is doing some desultory file work.
But Archer works—and works brilliantly—by combining tight story-writing with an improvisational rhythm. Jon Benjamin, of course, is an old hand at the loose, improv style from his work on Dr. Katz and Home Movies, and while he still has those rhythms going, he and everyone else also sounds refreshingly focused and disciplined. The result is the best of both worlds: a lot of surprising, character-driven comedy that locks together into genuinely interesting plot lines. So episodes do not simply wander from gag to gag, but are actually structured so as to build to climactic moments; "Killing Utne," for instance, builds real suspense by showing competing teams of assassins closing in on their target, and ends with a couple of bodies being torched in a bathroom. Jokes that in other series would be throwaway riffs—as with Crenshaw's wandering accent in "Mole Hunt"—actually foreshadow plot twists. It is also dense with intelligent dialogue. Where many shows of this kind turn their characters into ciphers—cardboard cutouts who mouth the writers' quips, and who surreptitiously comment on their own lack of reality—Archer's actors and writers make the characters themselves sound smart and engaging, and thus very real, even when they're doing stupid things. There are a few haven't-we-seen-this-lots-of-times-before tropes, such as the Family Guy-style "flashbacks," but mostly the series works as a fairly straight-forward drama that has been soaked in absurdity and then set on fire.
A lot of the credit for the series immediate success has to go to the cast. Benjamin is at the center of most of the show's scenes, and does very well as the title character, but he is also ably supported by Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell, and Judy Greer, and is actually overshadowed in many scenes by Jessica Walter as his mother, the brittle, M-like Malory Archer. But the entire cast is fresh and energetic sounding, and are able to put a wicked spin on even the less inspired lines.
The animation looks inexpensive, but not nearly as cheap as the usual Adult Swim shows. It is not nearly as fluid or dynamic as The Venture Brothers, but there is more movement, and more subtle movement, than on a Sealab or Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The design work is quite handsome, and in some cases (as with Lana's swaying hips) is nicely and subtly married to the animation.
There isn't a lot that's new about Archer, and there is nothing about it that will seem ground-breaking or avant-garde. But what it does, it does about as well as I've ever seen it done before. One of these days the contemporary taste for "hip," "edgy" and "ironic" comedy will pass, and shows like The Simpsons and Seinfeld and the Adult Swim lineup will come to seem as quaint and dated as I Love Lucy and The Flintstones. But when that day comes, Archer could be one of the few that ranks as a genuine classic.

Aisha Tyler - Comedian and Spy?
Our favorite gaming goddess, the talented and beautiful Aisha Tyler, can also be called ambitious- she’s been pretty busy recently. In between her games of Halo: ODST (we assume PWNing noobs is her normal schedule), she’s managed to make a hilarious video at Funny or Die spoofing 70’s blaxploitation films while injecting sarcastic Aisha Tyler humor.
In addition to this she’s signed on FX’s newest show, Archer, an animated spy comedy satirizing the supposed thrilling world of espionage. Chances are you have caught a commercial or two of the show, in which Aisha plays Lana Kane. Archer airs for the first time tomorrow night at 10 PM on FX. Also, Archer is rated TV-MA and is not for kids.

The Top Ten Best Things About Making "Archer" -- By Aisha (i.e. Lana)
1. You can show up to work in your underpants. Not that I ever have, but it’s nice to know I could, should I ever get the wholey spirit.
2. I get to use such soon-to-be-newly-minted Oxford-dictionary inductees as “bare-backinest” and “poonhoundery.”3. My character, Lana Kane, walks around the ISIS office all day wearing double-holstered automatic-weaponry and a killer mini-dress. I walk around my home office all day barefoot, wearing torn sweatpants and a t-shirt that reads “my other ride is your mom.”
4. If I wanted to wear that outfit to work on “Archer,” I could. Yes, bare feet and all. Smoke that, Britney Spears!
5. The cartoon me is insanely badass and could kill twenty bad guys with a butter knife and a cinnamon Chiclet. The real me is so clumsy I could cut myself slicing a bagel. Not on the knife, on the actual bagel. Not even one with seeds or anything. A plain bagel.
6. Show creator Adam Reed is one of the funniest people I know. Also, being a Southerner, he can drink me under the table. Politely, of course.
7. Adam’s politeness dissipates once he’s actually under the table (hello, bellowed stream of increasingly incendiary curse words!) I blame our last three bar fights on him (but not the first two; those were totallymy fault). I’m sure he’ll beg to differ, but who’s got the knife wound and the class-action lawsuit? Hm?
8. Sterling Archer is officially the hottest cartoon character ever. After Lana Kane, that is. Smoke that, Avatar! (Yes, I know the Avatar characters aren’t exactly “cartoons,” per se But come on — they’re blue. That’s pretty Smurfy if you ask me.)
9. They make Archer in Atlanta, which is one of the funnest, friendliest cities in America. Only don’t call it “Hotlanta,” as that’ll get you stabbed (see number 7). They’re friendly, but so persnickety! Jeez!
10. As you read above, Archer is made in America. Our animation is one-hundred percent red-blooded U. S. of Freakin’ A, baby. These colors don’t run. And that’s because they were applied digitally by computer software, and that shiznit never runs. Especially when it’s American. F**k yeah.
11. Did I mention I could go to work in my underpants? (Yes, okay, that was eleven. Don’t be such an apple polisher.)
Watch Archer. It’ll change your life. Or at least, it will significantly improve the 30 minutes you invest in it each week. Plus you’ll learn some new curse words. Yup!!!

No Holds Barred: FOX Stars Discuss Sarah Palin, Simon Cowell, and Conan O'Brien
Sarah Palin! Simon Cowell! "Glee!" Conan O'Brien? Multiple headlines were made Monday at the FOX TCA's in Pasadena. The stars from your favorite FOX shows weighed in on the issues.
Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin is headed to Fox News. "House"'s Olivia Wilde expressed her allegiance, saying, "I love the Fox network, but I can't say anything about Fox News."
Aisha Tyler of the new show "Archer" did not hold back her opinion: "My only question is, I feel like to be qualified as a pundit, you actually have to have a basic mastery of the English language, so I don't think she's qualified for the job."
The cast of "Glee" is enjoying a week of partying. They found out while on set Monday that their hit show got picked up early for a second season. Jessalyn Gilsig said, "I'm still pinching myself. I feel like this has all happened really fast and I feel like we're getting these pickups faster than we're used to, so I'm just grateful to be on the list."
The gleaming cast is also prepping for their Golden Globe debut. Chris Colfer told ET he'll be accompanied by his cast mates on the big night: "This is kind of like prom for me, so I'm glad to be going with a group, rather than bringing a parent." Kevin McHale will likely wear a tux for the occasion, but stated, "It's a lady's nights. The ladies are going to look beautiful."
Conan jumped coasts a few months ago, moving from New York to Los Angeles. Rumors are swirling that he will make another jump…from his post at NBC to FOX. Aisha said, "I am going to stir the tea leaves inside and see what I hear."
"Glee" star Jane Lynch said of the rumor, "I did the Conan O'Brien show about two weeks ago and he's about the nicest guy in the whole world. So, it'd be wonderful to have him in the FOX family."
And the biggest entertainment news of all, Simon Cowell announced the season of "American Idol" that debuts tonight will be his last before launching an American version of his British "X Factor." Chris Colfer wondered, "Who are they going to find to replace him?...Maybe a couple of us from 'Glee,' we'll do guest appearances."
Aisha said, "That's confusing....I think that 'American Idol' is one of the few shows to have done this well for this long. It's almost an anomaly...It may be a kinder, gentler 'Idol' after he's gone."

'Archer' hits comedy bull's-eye
It’s always sunny in Philadelphia, but programming executives at FX Network won’t be satisfied until they have another comedy series as good as FX dramas “Damages” and “Rescue Me.”
To be sure, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has blossomed into a bona fide cult hit, and fall comedy series “The League” has been picked up for a second season. But now it’s time to call in a new A-team. So meet Archer. Sterling Archer.
The title character in FX’s new, very smart, hilarious animated spy spoof, which premieres at 10 p. m. Thursday is a buff-bodied secret agent who probably could erase memories of that famous shot of Daniel Craig rising out of the surf in “Casino Royale.”
Except James Bond never worked for his mommy. That was the hook that series creator Adam Reed found to hang this clever, adult parody on, he says.
“That was exactly the ‘Eureka!’ moment,” Reed recalls. “It came to me as I was pulling into my driveway. I thought, ‘Oh. There we go.’ ”
This secret agent parody is built around the life and adventures of hunky but self-absorbed secret agent Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin). As an agent for the International Secret Intelligent Service, Archer is forced to work with agency head Malory Archer (Jessica Walter, “Arrested Development”), a hard-to- please mother who gives him an emasculating code name: “Duchess.”
Archer’s chief competition for missions is his Amazonian ex-lover, Lana (Aisha Tyler), who now is hooked up with effete ISIS comptroller Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell, “Saturday Night Live”).
Tyler, a video game junkie, says she jumped at the chance to play the formidable Lana.
“I play all the shoot-em-up (video games), so she really is a secret alter ego that I have been holding in my pocket for a long time,” Tyler says.
Reed admits that Parnell never fails to amaze by coming up with multiple, equally funny readings of every line (although the show features loose-sounding overlapping dialogue, the actors actually record their lines separately, and technicians, including Reed, mix the results in the editing room).
“On ‘SNL,’ you’re reading 40 different pieces a week and having to make what are often spot choices about how you are going to interpret what somebody else has written for you,” Parnell says. “It’s an amazing training ground, to make quick choices and come up with variations even in the rehearsal process.”
While Reed says he is delighted with his cast of voice actors, he takes special pride in snagging Walter, whose work he admired so much in a previous TV comedy.
“I am such a huge fan of hers,” he says. “For me, the two best comedy shows of all time are ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and ‘Arrested Development.’ When we sent out letters to casting agents, for that character we added in parentheses, ‘Think Jessica Walter.’ We got an e-mail back from her agent saying, ‘How about the real Jessica Walter?’ And then I just ran around the office in circles.”
And Walter’s casting has paid off in another benefit. Her “Arrested” TV spouse, Jeffrey Tambor, does a guest stint in an early episode that the actor enjoyed so much that Reed has created a new character — the head of a rival agency called ODIN, who shares a secret sexual history with Malory — for Tambor. That’s right: the bickering George and Lucille Bluth will be going at it in again in animated form.
It all adds up to the kind of smart, edgy and very adult comedy that FX apparently is looking for.

Our Exclusive Interview with Aisha Tyler & Adam Reed of 'Archer'
When talking to two of the world’s deadliest funny people, I found it’s best to be armed with orange pop and quick access to the google search engine. Did you know what ‘Greenmantle’ was about?
Alright you cheeky monkies – we’ve reviewed Archer in advance, we’ve posted gobs of pictures for you to drool over and so, I just need to know… WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK OF US? (Please picture me shaking your helpless shoulders as my voice raises in irrational hysteria. …Don’t get turned on, though.) Well, you are right to think we have more. Very good. Very wise. You could be a spy. But I’m not here to be your guidance counselor, dude. Let’s focus. TV. We love TV. So now I’m going to share with you an interview that I took part in along with Adam Reed (writer/creator of Archer) and Aisha Tyler (Lana on Archer).
The energetic (and I suspect never boring) pair could easily host a daily radio/talk show and I’d listen every day even if it meant getting up early (and then I’d promptly go back to bed like the sloth I am). When you get the right people together on a good project… well you’ve seen Sabrina the Teenage Witch, you know what happens!
Aisha and I actually had something in common during the conference call. We are both nerds who, during a moment when we weren’t “on”, took time to check our respective Twitter accounts. I’ve talked to lots of celebrities at this point (am I totally bragging?), but none of them have ever really tweeted to me! (I think they put me on their blacklists after they deal with me, muahaha! Kidding, kidding. But RT’s don’t count.) So it was really fun when after I tweeted about the call that I discovered a certain Miss Tyler had tweeted back to me. We’re both rebels. Rebel nerds. It’s a thing. Come join our rebel nerd nation! I think Adam Reed will join, too. (I’d love to be in any group that the talented Reed is in, even if it’s a cheese of the month club.) And if not, I am fully confident that Aisha could make him join. She’s a tough chick!
And she’s also a smart chick (I’m so smart I typoed that as ’smark’ at first). Because of her insistence to be all smartypants I had to google the word ‘laud’. That’s right, I’m a writer and I wasn’t positively sure what that word meant. But isn’t it more important that I know that the show Archer is amazing? And speaking of Archer…
SmallScreenScoop (SSS):Adam, is Archer how you wish all James Bond movies had been?
Adam Reed (AR): No, I don’t. He’s not a good guy. I love James Bond as who he is. I wouldn’t want to mess with those movies. But when I was doing research for this spy business, I watched everything from the “Bourne” movies to “Johnny English”. [ I ] read tons of books all the way back to “Greenmantle” by John Buchan. And I read a lot of the James Bond novels, which are a lot darker than the movies. They really sort of put a smile on that guys face. In the novels he’s pretty misogynistic. There’s definitely some racist tones in those novels. And so that was part of the inspiration… trying to see how much of a jerk I could make this guy and still make him likable. I don’t know if ‘likable’ is the right word. Maybe ’sympathetic’ – even though he’s a total tool.
Aisha Tyler (AT): He’s kind of a jackass, right? So it’s like you don’t hate him… We were watching and were like, ‘That guy’s just such a jackass, but he’s not mean. He’s just kind of oblivious.’ And I think that’s the line. He’s a jerk – absolutely. But he never feels so mean spirited or cruel that you just want to throw him out a window. You just think, ‘God this guy needs to pull his head out of his ass’. That add where he smokes around a pregnant woman and she says ‘do you mind?’ – that’s one of the most outrageous ads I’ve ever seen. We had it on the TV here and we were like, “outraaageous!” but we were laughing out heads off. So there’s something about him that’s likable because he’s kind of a doof.AR: He is a doof.
AT: I have a doof in my life that I’ve known since I was very young. And he’s such a doof that if if I met him now I would never be friends with him. But he’s just like a cancer. I can’t cut him out, it’s too late. That’s kinda like Archer.
AR: Like one of those friends you have to prep your other friends for 20 minutes before they meet him. ‘Here’s some thing’s that are gonna happen… and I wanna prepare you for this. He is gonna grab your butt. At some point.’
AT: ‘He’s also gonna be super racist. He doesn’t mean it. He doesn’t understand what it means. He’s like a child.’
AR: ‘It comes from an innocent place.’
AT: ‘He may puke. He may poop. We don’t know. Just keep a perimeter.’
SSS: Would you be friends with Archer if he was a real person?
AT: I think I answered that question. (Laughs)
SSS: Aisha, when you go to record do you go in your pajamas or do you ever wear something special to get into Lana’s mindset?
AT: No…depending on where I’m recording I’m in various states of ‘I can’t believe she wore that’ on TMZ.com. I’m very, very lucky – the booth that we record in is, like, down the street from my house. So, I’m there usually in whatever I slept in that morning. And the guy – the sound technician – he’s not pleased – I don’t think. I think he has some picture in his head. And then I just stumble in there looking like a hobo. And he’s like ‘Mm, she’s just a step away from ending up on the front page of Gawker’. But when I was in New York I dressed up because I had to walk around. But, no – I never dress up to be Lana. Lana is never wearing any clothes, anyway.
AR: Rarely.
AT: Rarely. So if I went to dress up like Lana, then you know… arrested. So I’m usually just in sweats. And I jump around a lot. I don’t know about the other actors on the show, but you have to make all of these pictures in your head. I do a lot of leaping and sweating and pulling my hair while jumping up and down. So doing that in what Lana is wearing would result in some type of terrible injury, I’m sure.
SSS: So are you able to consider that your exercise for the day?
AT: That has been my exercise the last few sessions. I gotta pull it together. But it’s very strenuous, if I do it right. And Lana’s also very intense. I do a lot of screaming. So if I don’t leave with a sore throat then I didn’t do my job
that day.SSS: Speaking of screaming, my favorite thing that you say is, “YUUUP”. I just love that so much.
AT: We were talking about that yesterday, weren’t we Adam?
AR: We were. I felt guilty because it feels like I sort of co-opted Aisha’s real-life thing.
AT: I have lots of other things. I’ll come up with a new thing. I’m working on it now. And now it’s become a thing she (Lana) has done in a bunch of episodes. It’s gonna be my ‘Hey now!’ So I’m excited, I’ve coined a word.
SSS: It would be a great ringtone.We love it.
AT: Aaahh – are the people who could do that listening? Do they hear the ‘it would be a great idea’?
SSS: I’ll put it out there. (Editor’s note: This is me putting it out there. Are you listening?!?!)
AR: We made a ringtone for the show. And I think it’s gonna be available on the website. It’s a rap song. Sort of a dirty South rap song. Archer’s got theringtone, and it’s “Mulatto Butts”.
AT: (Cracks up in the distance) Our butts are pretty flat. It’s not the ass I would have chosen if I were going to laud one.
AR: So look for that on…ringtones dot gov.
Whether or not we have level 1 clearance to watch a show that’s this fun, we’re going to be able to have it in our lives and cuddle it dearly to our bosoms. So watch. Enjoy. And don’t try to re-enact the episodes unless you have amazing health insurance.
Archer premieres Thursday, January 14 at 10PM ET/PT.

FX's new animated show Archer
With Fox series such as The Simpsons and Family Guy having set the standard for network animated comedy, it may have been only a matter of time before cable sibling FX would try its hand at the genre. And judging by its new spy series Archer, premiering Thursday, Jan. 14, the cable net seems to have raised—and simultaneously lowered—the bar.
From creator Adam Reed (Adult Swim's Sealab 2021), Archer revolves around a group of super sleuths who spend more time navel-gazing than actually spying. Oh, and, Spoiler Alert, the show revels in its often hilarious, if, at times, filthy, inappropriateness.
Mediaweek correspondent Alan Frutkin talks with cast member Aisha Tyler about her role on the series, dirty jokes, and the collaborative process of making great comedy.

Actress Aisha Tyler did her thesis on global warming?
Actress Aisha Tyler’s eco-living efforts go a lot further than driving a hybrid -- she just did a green renovation on her home. “Low-flow toilets, sustainable woods throughout the house, low-VOC paints and finishes,” she told MNN. “We have a heat pump instead of a regular air conditioning system, and a tankless water heater. My minor in college was environmental policy,” she notes. “My thesis was about global warming. If only they listened to me!”
The latest TV project for Tyler (CSI, Ghost Whisperer, 24, Friends) is the FX animated series Archer, a completely non-PC spy spoof premiering Jan. 14. “It’s probably one of the most fun jobs I’ve ever had,” she raves. “I get to spend an hour and half saying unacceptable things in a little room and then we cackle hysterically. It’s fun to brainstorm and come up with ideas on the spot. It’s very free form and you’re able to really go crazy in the moment.” Her curvaceous character, Secret Agent Lana Kane, is the porn-loving ex-girlfriend of the titular spy. “I think she’s awesome,” says Tyler. “Lana was drawn already before I got involved, but it was nice to have been thought of as that stacked!” -

Our Advance Review of "Archer" on FX
FX has a new half-hour animated comedy series called ARCHER will premiere on January 14th, 2010 at 10 pm. The show revolves around the International Secret Intelligence Service or ISIS. It’s a spy agency, of course. We get great voicework from H Jon Benjamin as Sterling Archer (codename: Duchess), Jessica Walter as Archer’s Mom Malory, Aisha Tyler as Archer’s ex-girlfriend Agent Lana Kane, George Coe as the butler Woodhouse, Chris Parnell as ISIS comptroller (whatever THAT is) Cyril Figgis, and Judy Greer as Malory’s secretary Cheryl. And I gotta say, this has got to be the most fun thing to do voice over work for. I wouldn’t know since I’ve never done any actual voice over work unless you count talking over my friend while she sleeps…but – hell, that makes me kind of a pro doesn’t it?
FX graciously allowed me to view several of the season one episodes for Archer. Of course, I’m not majorly into cartoons unless they were from the 80’s (Jetsons! Smurfs! Jem!) I tend to assume that most new “adult” cartoons are going to just try to be overly hipster-ish… But I really did like watching this show. It’s the wit. The wit is strong with this show. Archer is playful (read: nonsensical in the best way) and comical. If I ever described things as a “romping good time”, I would say that about this show.
If James Bond had mother issues and was a bit more neurotic, he could easily pass for Archer Sterling. The team of players really work well together. I could have done without Lana’s cartoon boobs being so ginormous, but that’s just a personal preference. I happen to love the way Aisha Tyler has Lana say “Yuuuuup” so it evens out. I relate to Cheryl the most because…I just do. I’m dodging questions about this if you ask.

Aisha Tyler: Sworn to Secrecy
From Broadcasting and Cable: “Aisha Tyler is “relatively sworn to secrecy” about her ABC talk show project she is developing, she said in response to a critic’s question during the panel at the Television Critics Association press tour Aug. 7 for upcoming FX animated comedy Archer, in which she voices the sexy love-interest Lana Kane.
Tyler said, “we are shooting in a few weeks,” but when a critic pressed her further to reveal when and where the show might air, she said “already you strayed into assassination territory.”
Considering that she was appearing to promote the FX show, which she calls “radical” in how far animation allows for the scripted medium to be pushed, she practically begged the critics to stop asking her about the Disney project–for her own safety.

Aisha Tyler in Animated Comedy
Aisha Tyler will voice a character in FX's new comedy series tentatively-titled "Archer," a new half-hour animated comedy series from Adam Reed will launch this fall. The project has received a six-episode order. "Archer" is set at ISIS, an international spy agency whose highly trained employees constantly confuse, undermine, betray and royally screw one another.

(Jan 07, 2008) Now that Balls of Fury is coming out on DVD, viewers have the opportunity to freeze frame on the scantily clad Aisha Tyler on their big screen HDTVs. Perhaps more lingering shots of Mahogany, the bad guys' evil villainous sidekick, would have benefited the movie's theatrical run. Tyler covered up a tad more for interviews, perhaps so much that her body couldn't adjust to room temperature.

AOL’s TV Squad is excited about Aisha Tyler’s new syndicated deal for her own talk show, changing the comedy talk show wasteland of quality programming with a beautiful female at the helm.
ABC has given the green light for Aisha develop a pilot for a hybrid style talk show that incorporates sketch, stand-up and other variety comedy into a fully wired show that will communicate with their audience over the “Internet's series of complex tubes.”

"The Aisha Tyler Show" will incorporate the traditional talk show with comedic political commentary, comedy segments and other late-night show elements.

SF Gate interviewed Aisha Tyler about her current standup dates at Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco, and growing up in the Bay City, here’s what Aisha had to say. Starting tonight, she headlines for four nights at Cobb's Comedy Club.
Aisha Tyler describes her San Francisco upbringing in just six words: "I was an unbelievably nerdy kid."
She attended the School of the Arts at McAteer High School, and after classes she spent time with her father at the huge arcade near the downtown bus terminal, dropping quarters into Defender, Centipede and Tempest. "To this day, my father will call me and hold the phone next to a Ms. Pac Man machine," Aisha says. "My happy place."

Aisha Tyler Featured in Baltimore Sun
The Baltimore Sun had the chance to meet up with Aisha Tyler when she was on the east coast performing at the DC Improv and was quite impressed with all of her accomplishments, having set several records in her career so far.
As the Sun reflects, “First, the notable: Tyler was the first black female host of the celebrity-gossip TV show "Talk Soup" and played the first recurring black female character on the smash-hit sitcom "Friends."
Now, the wacky: Tyler, an avid gamer, was both the first female and the first black American to earn a spot on the exclusive seven-member Halo Council, a group of video game fanatics. And she jokingly contends that for years, she was the only black female snowboarder in the history of the sport.”"I'm quite confident I was the only African-American female snowboarder in the world," Aisha said. "I'm sure I've been surpassed by now."

Aisha also reflects on the excitement of getting a recurring role on "Friends" as a fan who had watched nearly every prior episode. Aisha Tyler at LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival March 5-8
"Nowassitall," a music video written, directed by, and starring Aisha Tyler, will be presented at the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival, which takes place at the newly renovated Downtown Independent Theatre in Los Angeles March 5-8, 2009. The opening night, hosted by Aisha Tyler, will include a pre-reception followed by a screening of shorts by the festival's celebrity participants.
During the festival, Funnyordie.com will present world premieres and exclusive vintage shorts, one of which stars Bob Odenkirk; and Gary Anthony Williams and Jeannie Roshar will present a film starring Reno 911's Cedric Yarbrough. The program will also include a short called "Head, Heart and Balls...or why I gave up Smoking Pot," directed by Peter Foldy and starring Adam Corolla; and "Boutonniere," directed by Coley Sohn and starring Reno 911's Wendi McLendon-Covey.

Aisha to Host L.A. Comedy Shorts Opening Night Flavor-Tripping Party on March 5, 2009

This 2007 article discusses the existence of the BBF what it means for black actresses. BBFs vary in personality and looks, but they often have several things in common: being gorgeous, independent, loyal, and successful. They usually live or work with their white friend but aren't around all that much, except for moments when the heroine is in crisis. And BBFs are often experts in the ways of the world, using that knowledge to help their friend.
Aisha Tyler was the first recurring African-American love interest on "Friends" and played the best friend to Jennifer Love Hewitt in "Ghost Whisperer." She left the series to devote more time to her first directorial effort, a buddy comedy about two female cops that she will star in, and said she feels fortunate that she is mostly offered roles that are more complex and interesting than the traditional BFF. "But I don't know what alternative is," said Tyler. "I think the more roles there are for African-Americans, the better. Black Voices: Aisha Tyler Featured in "Balls of Fury" and "Death Sentence"
With a lack of strong female roles for African-American women, Aisha Tyler has the distinction of appearing in two films that opened the same weekend: the comedy "Balls of Fury" with Christopher Walken and the revenge thriller "Death Sentence" with Kevin Bacon. In "Balls of Fury," Aisha plays a character named Mahogany. Tyler says, "She's this Grace Jones-esque assassin and the bodyguard of Feng, who's this crime overlord and gun dealer played by Christopher Walken. The movie is set in the underground world of competitive ping pong and all of them battle to the death. So if someone loses a match, my job is to assassinate them."

Aisha Tyler in the LA Daily News: "Halo 3" Video Game Preview
Aisha Tyler attended the sneak preview of "Halo 3," the third chapter of the first-person shooter video game for XBox 360, at Quixote Studios in West Hollywood in May 2007. Aisha, Paris Hilton, Victoria Pratt, and Jennifer Elise Cox were among the few women who posed with various "Halo" characters. Also in attendance were Geoffrey Rush, Josh Henderson, Dane Cook, and basketballer John Salley. Aisha Tyler Shows off her Improv Chops
The Tahoe Daily Tribune profiles Aisha Tyler, who performs stand-up at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe this week. Many people know Aisha from "Talk Soup," the Emmy Award-winning pop culture show on E! The Entertainment Network. Esquire Magazine designated Aisha as one of its "Women We Love," calling her "sweetly wicked." Maxim made her one of its "Hot 100" three years in a row, and Vibe deemed her "the next Queen of Comedy." Daily Variety calls her a "multi-genre threat," and Tongue gushes, "(She's) that impossible combination of hot-as-the-day-is-long and so cool...the most unlikely crossover since Charley Pride."
Aisha gained a loyal following when she started appearing on TV, such as on Bill Maher's "Politically Correct," "Friends," "Nip/Tuck," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "24," and "The Ghost Whisperer." In this 2001 issue of LA Magazine, Aisha Tyler, the host of E's "Talk Soup," is described as someone who "delivers an in-your-face irreverence with a throwaway elan that makes even the speediest channel surfer back up and pause." Aisha grew up with her father in San Francisco's Haight district. She says she was "geeky, unpopular," and the only black girl at her private school. She later switched to a performing arts school and took improv classes; she continued honing her stand-up skills after moving to LA in 1996 with her Dartmouth sweetheart-turned-husband. Now six feet tall and with "screen-goddess looks," Aisha is taking Hollywood by storm.

Aisha in Self Magazine: Stress Busters for Busy Bodies
In this 2001 edition of Self magazine, Aisha is featured in the fitness section. Aisha has completed the Los Angeles marathon twice and the Vegas marathon once, but with her busy schedule she needs an exercise routine that she can squeeze in before, after, or even at work. Self's fitness guru met with Aisha to help her tweak her routine. Aisha in Honey Magazine: The Beauty Queen of Comedy
Aisha talks to Honey Magazine in 2001 about her love of M.A.C. cosmetics."This is my M.A.C. store," she says of the location on Robertson Boulevard in L.A. Having once been a "really geeky tomboy from San Francisco with a Jheri curl," Aisha has learned how to embrace makeup. "It wasn't until I first got involved in the business that I really began wearing makeup," she says. Now she's a self-confessed M.A.C. junkie. "I'll come here because I need one thing and then I'll end up leaving with $100 worth of stuff," she says. "They always have new and fun products and lots of great colors for black skin."

Aisha in Vogue: Who's that Girl?
This 2001 article profiles Aisha Tyler as a fashionista, a "style star in the making" who "hasn't executed a fashion 'don't' since stepping into the spotlight." Tyler told Vogue, "I adore fashion. I always have, and now that I'm in the position to wear some of the designers that I have always loved, well, I'm in heaven. I love Narcisco Rodriguez, Calvin Klein, and Donna Karan. I am not a stylist, and I don't have time to shop all day, but I have friends [salespeople at her favorite boutiques] who will pull things off the racks that they know I'll like."
She continued, "I am a lucky girl. I used to be self-conscious about my height, but now I love wearing dresses that elongate my figure. But don't get me wrong--I have had bad fashion moments! I had Jheri curls in eighth grade. I wore lace skirts and crucifixes during my Madonna years. And I overdosed on J. Crew in college."
When asked what trends she'll be following in the fall, she says, "I don't like trends. I don't relish anything about the eighties right now. If I see another shoulder pad, I'm going to have an aneurysm. I like the very classic, Grace Kelly look: clean, pretty, young, and fresh."

Aisha Tyler Gets Her Cake--and Then Some!
After blowing out her candles on her 37th birthday at the Maxim Style Awards Presented by Casio party, Aisha Tyler (who made Maxim's Hot 100 of 2005 list) was presented with first-class airfare and a weeklong stay in the Dominican Republic at the Maxim Bungalows resort. She'll also have access to Maxim's 54-foot yacht. While Brody Jenner and Cris Judd also received weekend stays at the Maxim Bungalow that night, they didn't get airfare--Maxim saved that extra-special gift just for Aisha.

Feeling a Cop: Aisha Tyler Can't Escape Playing the Long, Sexy Arm of the Law
Aisha Tyler tells the Daily News that her role in "Death Sentence" marks her fourth role as an officer of the law. She plays a police detective investigating the murder of an executive's son. When the killer is released on a technicality, the victim's father (Kevin Bacon) seeks revenge, and Aisha's character finds herself on his trail instead. "I'm drawn to roles like that," she says. "I'm attracted to strong female roles. I like to explore the personality of people who pursue a self-sacrificial profession. I find that compelling. Most people have a hard time putting themselves in the line of fire."
"This isn't a traditional revenge movie," Aisha said of "Death Sentence." "[Director] James Wan wanted to make a polemic against violence, so the results of the revenge are catastrophic. As my character says in the film, 'An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.'"

Aisha Tyler on "Friends"
Aisha talks to the Daily Haggis about her role as Joey's and Ross's love interest on "Friends," who also happens to be a sexy paleontologist. She's not the first nonwhite girlfriend on "Friends," but she's the first to have a sustained role in a show that's "been criticized for whitewashing multiethnic Manhattan."
"The role wasn't written particularly for an African-American. I think they were just trying to cast the right actress," Aisha says. She nearly didn't survive hearing the news that she had landed the part from her manager, as she was driving in traffic at the time. "I screeched over and practically killed three people. And I started banging on my car and it was new and I was thinking I probably shouldn't bang on my car," she said. "It was the biggest thing in the whole world."

Aisha Tyler to Appear on "Celebrity Jeopardy!"
Aisha Tyler will join Tom Bergeron of "Dancing with the Stars" and Elizabeth Perkins of "Weeds" on "Celebrity Jeopardy!", which will air on March 10, 2009. Aisha told the Las Vegas Sun that she brushed up on her reading before the taping. "I read the entire Internet," she joked. "It took me, like, three days."
Aisha said she was hoping to see categories like "cocktails" and "XBox 360 games" on the game board, and that she would do well if "French" or "food" categories popped up. "I'm a foodie," she admitted, "(but) I'm done if they do sports."
All three contestants were guaranteed at least $25,000 in winnings for the charity of their choice, but first-place contestants earn at least $50,000 for their charity. Aisha's winnings will be split between Doctors without Borders and the International Rescue Committee's Congo initiative.

Aisha Tyler on "Million Dollar Password"
The second season of CBS's "Million Dollar Password" kicked off with celebrity contestants Aisha Tyler and William Shatner. An updated version of the classic game show "Password," the series, hosted by Regis Philbin, features contestants who team up with celebrities to give and receive clues to one another to determine a password designated for a particular round.
On the first episode, Aisha was the first to have two $100,000 rounds!
